I'm using a 38-in./350 grams Dos Palos made of tough-wood materials, very suitable for striking. These are not memorized patterns, randomly done as responses to an imaginary attacker.... just a sort of shadow fighting. As one gains mastery in the handling of his weapon as if it's already an extension of his hands, various maneuvers will just come easy & free-flowing. I was trained to make my own patterns that suit my own physical attributes & speed..... I never had any memorized patterns to follow, always reacting to variables. The best way I noticed personally is sparring with various partners with different styles. If you always practice with your own classmates, you would have a limited exposure to fighting techniques of other styles. Footwork in coordination with hands & body movements is very essential. Never stay too long in one place & as the weapon moves, the body moves, so that you make yourself as a moving target for your opponent. Making a lot of strikes in just one static position may not be effective, because the opponent might be always on the move too. When defending, minimize your openings by moving in a retreating mode if you chamber your weapons or doing wide-arc swings. Always reserve some speedy power strikes just in case the attacker is too aggressive to penetrate, so that it will be costly for him to continue his intrusion. By: Rev. Gaudencio B.
